Nine Months to the Day [Nov. 15th, 2007|08:09 pm]
Mike
As some of you may recall, my grandmother had a severe stroke late in the evening on February 15th. The doctors at the time gave her 72 hours to live. The 72 hours turned into a week and weeks turned into a month, and so on.
during that 72 hour time period, my uncle (who has power of attorney) and my grandfather made the decision to have the doctors insert feeding and breathing tubes.
Over the weekend, without informing the family, my uncle and grandfather made the decision to have the feeding tube removed.
I don't disagree with this decision, but I do have issues with the timing. Why at the holidays? Why not wait til January after the holidays? She wasnt getting any better, but she wasnt getting any worse.
I have my suspicions why the decision was made to do it now, but it isnt going to bring her back. This was inevitable, it was going to have anyways.

Anyways, my Dad called me this morning to give me the news. I'll be flying to Baltimore tomorrow morning. then making the 3 hour drive home to my parents place.

I cant say that I'm looking forward to the trip. It's been WWIII since they made the decision to pull the tube. I just want to go home, pay my respects, and get out of there.

Hugs to all.

Why at the holidays? Honestly, that was probably why.

Which is better? To remember her in good health at the holidays, or forever remember her in her hospitalized state at the holidays?

Most likely they felt it would make the holidays harder, not easier.

They probably didn't discuss it with anyone else because they will most likely get the brunt of the family upset at them for having done it. No need to bring more people into the firing range.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss though. *HUG*
